I moved from Indiana to Clearwater, Florida with my boyfriend, Alan Green, in June 1996 to work for Kim Bright Cassano, a prominent Scientologist who owns several Clearwater businesses. Kim said I should start taking Super Blue Green Algae, something she distributed through a multilevel marketing program. The algae is harvested from upper Lake Klamath in Southern Oregon and was popular among Scientologists in Clearwater. Sales literature promotes it for everyone--pregnant women, newborn babies, and the family pet. Detractors describe it as 'pond scum.' My twin, Sandie, remembers me taking as many as 30 algae capsules at a time. I was also signed up for several Scientology courses. As the news came out out about the death of Lisa McPherson, my boyfriend Alan came home from an overnight trip to Orlando and found me dead in our apartment. It was March 27,1997. In an interview with the St. Petersburg Times, Scientology officials first said I had 'never set foot into the church in Clearwater,' until they were shown my certificates of attendance at courses I took in 1996. I had the same Medical Examiner that Lisa McPherson had--Joan Wood, and she said I died from a 'possible mitral valve prolapse.' I did have a heart problem, an irregular heartbeat. Lots of people have that. The FDA has twice ordered blue green algae off the market because distributers made health claims for it. State and federal officials question it's safety. Consumers say it causes increased heart rates, breathing difficulties and other problems. I was 5 foot 9 inches tall and weighed 101 pounds when I died. I was 23. |
